Some people pack headphones even if they don't bring an audio device as some airlines still charge for standard headphones to listen to in flight movies. Even if they don't, why not listen on some high definition stereo headphones that fit comfortably? If you are taking children, consider bringing some travel games.
If you are able to get by with just a couple of small entertainment items, you should consider using a small bag for your carry on luggage for easier carrying. It makes sense to keep your airline carry on luggage as simple as possible, even on long flights. But, you should also consider taking a change of underwear with a simple t-shirt and shorts because you never know when the airline will lose your luggage.
