Here are a few features to look for whether you by a soft-sided or a hard-shelled rolling luggage. Thicker and more compact wheels will last longer and should be covered with a thick rubber coating. Try the handle a few times. It should fold and expand completely each time. Anything that sticks out will eventually get caught in the equipment that gets it to the plane and break or rip. If you find an odd color, get it and customize it. If you are sorting through a jungle of two-wheeled plain black luggage at the airport, you may be a while.
Traveling by car is much easier on your luggage than flying by plane. If you have a more expensive bag with a lot of outside pockets just put it in the trunk and it will be safer. Even these fashionable designer bags still have wheels. Soft bags with tiny wheels can sometimes double as pillows or something to sit on if you are waiting for someone to pick you up.
